Firefighters have extinguished a fire in a Chulmleigh barn this morning (Sunday).

Grain in the barn was 'well alight'; with multiple fire crews working hard to ensure the blaze did not spread to a neighbouring large diesel tank.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service teams from Chulmleigh, South Molton and Witheridge, plus a water carrier from Barnstaple responded to reports at 8.38am and tackled the fire.

A fire service spokesman said: "On arrival the crews confirmed that this was a grain dryer well alight situated next to a large diesel tank.

"The diesel tank was fortunately not involved in fire. The crews got to work using two breathing apparatus wearers and a hose reel jet.

"The crews surrounded the fire and confirmed that the grain dryer contained approximately three tonnes of grain. They worked using four breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and small tools to extinguish the fire.

"The fire was successfully extinguished using the above equipment as well as emptying the dryer. The diesel tank was unaffected after keeping it cool using a water spray."
