A man and his rather large dog are passing through North Devon this week on their 7,500-mile journey around the South West Coast Path.

Chris McQuillan, from Trowbridge, and four-year-old Mastiff-cross Moose started their stretch from Barnstaple today (Thursday) towards Bideford.

The pair started their journey at Portishead Point in Somerset on June 29 and anticipate the whole expedition will take between 18 months and two years.

The 42-year-old is raising money for three charities – Shelter, Thistle Foundation and Bras Not Bombs – along the way.

Chris, an engineer by trade, said he had been overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers offering him a place to pitch his tent for the night.

He said: “I originally wanted to complete the Camino de Santiago, an 800km walk across norther Spain, but my Spanish is not too good and it wasn’t going to be great with a dog in tow.

“I thought about one of the coastal paths instead. Looking at one quickly became looking at them all and in April I decided to walk the entire UK coastal path.

“It was an odd idea, but an odd idea I couldn’t shake.”

Chris and Moose have been living on around £3-£4 a day, and carrying all their wet weather and camping gear with them.

Chris first adopted Moose from an animal shelter in Bath two years ago, and they have been inseparable since.

“Now I am not quite sure who saved who,” he said.

Chris is passionate about the charities he is supporting and has set himself an ambitious target of £50,000 over the two years.

“I know at first they seem like three completely disconnected charities,” he said.

“But they are all linked by one fundamental human right, which is basic dignity.”

Chris said the pair did not have a set mileage per day, and some days were tougher than others.

He said: “Some bits of the coastline, especially over Exmoor, have been really hard. You definitely earn each view with all the steep inclines.”
