AT around 10.30 am on September 25, top children's author and illustrator Babette Cole, resplendent in open-topped car, will join an exuberant group of Appledore schoolchildren, along with Appledore Silver Band, jugglers and clowns, who will escort her into the village.

At St. Mary's Church she will open this year's Appledore Book Festival and talk about her amazing world and, in particular, the first in the new Fetlocks Hall pony school series of books.

Babette's first proper job, as she puts it, after art school, was as an illustrator for the BBC, working on Jackanory and TV comics. The published work for the BBC gave her the impetus to approach other publishers with her own books and she had the first one in print in 1976. Since when she has written over 70 books, the most well-known being Mummy laid an Egg which sold a million copies!

Born in Jersey and having lived in various parts of the world, including the West Indies where she has family still, Babette now lives in Dorset. She has a stud farm where she breeds show hunters Tickets are available from the Box Office: Docton Court Gallery, 2, Myrtle Street, Appledore, EX39 1PH, tel: 01237 424 429 or at www.appledorebookfestival.co.uk.
