PEOPLE who want to learn a new hobby, skill or catch up on education are invited to sample a series of free workshops this May. To mark Adult Learners Week - beginning on Saturday, May 17 - a range of taster sessions covering everything from website design to maths and crafts will be hosted by Devon Adult and Community Learning at centres throughout North Devon. There are many choices: brush up on numeracy and literacy, learn a new language or hobby, even improve promotion and employment opportunities. Two open mornings will be held on Monday, May 19, at the Two Lanes Centre in Belvedere Road, Ilfracombe and at Bideford Arts Centre on the quay. Both run from 10.30am-12 noon and invite visitors to drop in for a coffee and chat about the huge variety of courses and workshops on offer."We have 24 short workshops from Holsworthy to Combe Martin," said Ann Davies, manager of DACL."We really want people to come along and so are offering the first workshop for free - you can't lose and you will be really pleased you came!"Six learners who have discovered the benefits are currently enrolled on a 20-week OCNW Drawing and Painting Level 1 course, which covers the basics using a range of methods."I would urge anyone, whatever their ability or age, to come along to a course," said tutor Lin Staunton."You will find a friendly and supportive atmosphere - all our students here, without fail, have made progress since joining us."Helen Wood was just a beginner with an interest in learning more about art:"I did a bit at home but was frustrated by a lack of success so decided to come along to a class where they showed you techniques, observation and how to use colours," she said."We use everything from drawing and water colours to pastels; I now have a lot more confidence about trying different techniques and get a lot of enjoyment from the course."It's very social as well, so there's a lot to be gained from it."To find out about courses on offer with Devon Adult and Community Learning or to book a taster workshop, telephone the Ilfracombe centre on (01271) 864171 or Bideford on (01237) 472462.
