LONG-awaited plans to tidy up the disused Old Town cemetery in Bideford are due to start in the New Year. The overgrown cemetery has for years been a thorn in the side of the local community, because of its dereliction and its use as a hiding place for drug users, vandals and others. But now plans to transform it into a public green space are moving forward.A partnership between Torridge District Council, Bideford Bridge Trust and the Bideford Regeneration Initiative will see the cemetery tidied up and the height of its roadside wall reduced to allow better visibility and surveillance of the area.Surveys of the cemetery's contents and its wildlife are to be undertaken. Gravestones will be moved and there are plans for an interpretation board to record some of the particularly interesting old graves.A start awaits the receipt of tenders for the work over the next few months.
