A dog who gave a Barnstaple couple a reason to go on living is our latest poignant entry to the K9focus Heroes Awards. When John and Anne Beers beloved former greyhound was put to sleep, the terminally ill John did not want to live any longer, refusing food and his dialysis treatment.Love at first sightSo Anne quickly adopted Ruby, an ex-racer, from the Retired Greyhound Trust, who repaid that by saving Johns life. She walked into the living room where he had his bed, looked into his eyes and it was love at first sight Ruby had rescued us, Anne told the Gazette. John suffered from end stage renal failure, but while he was still able to go out on his mobility scooter, Ruby accompanied him and it was the highlight of his week to take her to Pilton Park and reconnect with other people, away from hospitals and dialysis. She even made friends with the ambulance crews who came to take John for dialysis and came to know which ones were arriving before John and Anne did.Dark daysAs time passed and he became more ill and frail, Ruby spent much of her time beside Johns bed, said Anne. She was my escape route in those dark days as John lay dying. I kept up her routine walks and that gave me a breathing space. I love her so much. As I wrote this, tears fall into her coat, as she lays faithfully across my feet, just as she did when on November 30 last year I held John in my arms as he passed away. Afterwards, Ruby proved a huge comfort to Anne: She is my sole reason for living without her I couldnt make it, she said. Despite former cruel treatment before being rescued, Ruby continued to trust humans and won Best Rescue at the K9focus dog show in Braunton.* There is still plenty of time to enter your canine companion into one of four categories Rescue To Hero, Pawsome Company, Working Hero and Just Because.
