More than 200 people attended a screening weekend in Barnstaple organised by Cardiac Risk in the Young.
The screening event was made possible thanks to the fundraising of Brenda Luckett, whose son Martyn died of an undiagnosed heart condition in 2005.
Brenda said the weekend was particularly poignant for her as it coincided with Mother’s Day.
“Martyn was healthy and active, he rode motorbike trials, and then on July 11, 2005, he just collapsed and passed away,” said Brenda.
Since his death, Martyn’s family have fundraised for CRY to hold yearly screening sessions in North Devon.
This weekend was their ninth one, and was held at Pilton Community College.
Brenda said: “I’m really pleased so many people turned up. Next year’s session in Bideford will cost £10,000 so we have a lot of fundraising to do before then.”
The screening involves an ECG test, a simple way to identify the majority of abnormalities that can cause sudden deaths in young people.
