SIR - Last week's Gazette included a feature entitled "Big boost for market plan". This referred to new proposals to move South Molton livestock market out of the town centre. A councillor was quoted as saying "the relocation of the market was not dependent on the coming of a new supermarket". If accepted this proposition would be very convenient for the District Council who are desperate to raise money by selling part of South Molton's central car park. Due to parking constraints the concept "Livestock Market Out - Supermarket In" was always seen as fundamental to the viable long term development of South Molton's central area. The Town Council should not allow the District Council off the hook of responsibility for ensuring that the livestock market actually moves. The District's offer of 1 million out of the proceeds of a car park sale could well be insufficient to swing the market move so they could eventually walk away with that and the other car park millions if the relocation fails. Result: Heads, the District wins; Tails, South Molton loses.Tony Martin, South Molton.
