People gathered at Bideford Quay this evening (Friday) to place candles and tributes in memory of the person whose body was recovered from the river earlier in the day.

They placed candles around the Tarka the otter statue and along the quay following news a body had been found in the River Torridge at East-the-Water that morning.

Police have said it could be that of a person reported missing from Bideford in January.

A police spokesman said earlier formal identification had yet to be completed to confirm the identity of the person found, but next of kin had been informed at what was a sensitive time.

The body was spotted by a member of the public on Friday morning.

It was recovered and property located in clothing suggests that this may be a reported missing person from the Bideford area that has been missing since early in January of this year.
