DAYS after being sacked by First for taking a shortcut, bus driver Mike Grigg suffered a personal tragedy when his mother died following a road accident.Mrs Jean Grigg, aged 67, was riding her mobility scooter in Ilfracombe on Tuesday of last week, when it was involved in a collision with a Mazda 323 at the bottom of Highfield Road. She died later at North Devon District Hospital.Mrs Grigg was very well known in Ilfracombe, having run a shop on The Quay. She had lived in Highfield Road all her life.Her son, Mike, was featured on the front page of the Gazette last week after being sacked from his job as a bus driver by First for taking a shortcut.Mike's wife, Emma, said there was considerable sympathy for him in Ilfracombe, especially since his mother's death, and she had been approached by people who had collected more than 200 signatures on a petition calling for First to give him his job back.At the time of going to press, a date for Mrs Grigg's funeral had not been fixed.The police are still appealing for witnesses to the accident.
