SIR - The Tesco at Braunton was opened in October and the new bridge across the River Caen was complete at the time. It was immediately closed to the public with metal fencing.Various reasons have been put forward for the continued closure but now it is still shut to the public. Many reasons have been given for the failure to open it - the latest being that it needs lighting. The Tarka Trail is in darkness except for the ridiculous expensive signs which move too fast for anyone to read. When it was suggested, some years ago, that the Tarka Trail had lighting, it was considered that this would upset the wildlife. There us quite a lot of sheltered housing near to the new Tesco (Mariners Close, Station Road and in the council car park), At present it is too far for them to walk to Tesco. They are deprived of a shopping choice by age discrimination.May I appeal to the Leaders of the councils - Devon County and North Devon - to get together with Tesco and get this footbridge open for the good of the residents? Set yourselves a deadline for March 10 (2009). Remember: with persons of goodwill, all things are possible. We must consider that if you light the footbridge you would have to walk off into the darkness of the Tarka Trail in the winter evenings.Stan Dibble,Velator.
