Breaking news....Bridge death

EMERGENCY services were called to the Torridge Bridge at Bideford at 9.43am this morning (Friday) after reports that a man had jumped from the bridge.

Police, fire and rescue and ambulance crews and coastguards were alerted.

The body of a man, believed to be in his 40s, was recovered on the downstream side of the middle section of the river bridge. The tide was out at the time.

It was recovered and flown to the North Devon District hospital by a Search and Rescue helicopter crew from Chivenor.

While the operation was taking place the A39 road was closed to Bideford-bound traffic at the Westleigh junction.
