Barnstaple town centre is filled with police this morning (Saturday, May 4) after a man was stabbed during a huge fight at a Boutport Street pub.

Police said initial reports suggested around 20 people were involved in fighting at the Horse and Groom pub.

A spokesman told the Gazette a man aged 36 had been stabbed, although at this stage his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing.

A 37-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of carrying out the stabbing.

It is understood the victim has been taken to hospital.

Reports from eye-witnesses have suggested there were as many as 10 police cars between Webbers and the Panniers while the incident was being dealt with.

Another account suggested as many as 40 people could have been involved in the fighting, but this has not been officially confirmed.
