A 17-year-old from Holsworthy has been named RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Regional Young Sailor of the Year, and awarded the Mike Copland Memorial Trophy in recognition of his bravery, determination and professionalism in helping others to enjoy watersports.Will Pepworth has been windsurfing, sailing and canoeing at Tamar Lakes, near Bude, since he was very young, and is a member of the RYA T15 windsurfing club there. For the last three years, while he has been working towards watersports qualifications so that he can fulfil his aim to train South West youngsters, he has endured personal tragedy with the illness and death of his grandfather, his only guardian.At an awards ceremony at Upper Tamar Lake, the chairman of the RYA SW Regional Committee, Peter Bartlett, praised Will for his achievements at such a difficult time: "A strong and brave young man, who is unfailingly professional, well respected and great with the kids and adults alike, Will is constantly trying to improve himself to enable to him to help others learn and enjoy the sports that he loves so much. He is a great supporter of T15, and will do his utmost to bring on any youngsters who dare show a spark of interest!"Paul Goodison, Olympic gold medal winning Laser sailor said: "Winning an RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year (YSOTY) Award is a fantastic achievement. Whether your achievements are at club level, within the sailing community or out on the race course, the awards give youngsters a real boost and inspire other young people to get involved in the sport."On 10 January at the PSP London Boat Show, Will Pepworth will take home another trophy, when he joins 12 other RYA Regional YSOTY Award winners from all over the UK for a VIP tour of the show and the eagerly anticipated awards ceremony at which they will receive their RYA Regional YSOTY awards.The Mike Copland Memorial Trophy is awarded in memory of a man who was an outstanding RYA Trainer of young people in the South West. It is awarded annually to the RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year for the South West region.
