Sophie Welch, 17, chosen from thousands to become an NCS Leader

A Braunton teenager has visited Downing Street and Google among others after being chosen as a youth leader from among thousands across the country.

Sophie Welch, 17, is now one of 100 National Citizen Service (NCS) Leaders in the UK after a rigorous selection process.

In common with other North Devon teenagers, Sophie spent three weeks of her summer holidays on the NCS programme, where she met other young people from different backgrounds, took on outdoor challenges and helped make a difference in the community.

Her team worked to rejuvenate a garden in Barnstaple so it could be used by the Seeds for Change project.

As part of the Leader programme she has been on various workshops including a media day in London, as well as sessions delivered by government departments and top businesses, including the Cabinet Office and Google.

“It’s amazing how much impact the three-week programme can have – not only to your confidence levels but the amazing opportunities that are opened up to you as a result,” said Sophie of her NCS experience.
