The first ever North Devon Christmas Market in Braunton is already nearly sold out. The 6.30pm market on Friday, December 4 in Caen Street car park will be raising money for the hospital charity Over and Above, divided between the Special Care Baby Unit scanner appeal and the Seamoor Unit. Organiser Neil Hampson said there were already 57 stalls booked, with only three spaces left, plus food vendors, two bars and live acts. He was involved in a Dickensian Christmas market back in Oxfordshire and when he and his family moved to North Devon, decided to try and set something similar up here. It was outlined to me there wasnt really anything substantial at Christmas locally so I posted on Facebook to see how it would be received and within three or four days about 800 people said they would come, said Neil. Its been received really well and lots of the shops have said they will be opening. I wanted to do something for the baby unit because both my boys have been in there, in Barnstaple and in Oxfordshire. When the application was taken to Braunton Parish Council it was passed unanimously and chairman Derrick Spear said it was a win win, for the village and for the charities. Ian Roome for the hospital charity said they were grateful for the support and added: We help thousands of residents in North Devon every year who will benefit from the market, so please do go along and support it.
