Braunton centenarian loves music, dance and the theatre

FAMILY and friends joined Violet Barrass at Tyspane Care Home in Braunton to celebrate her 100th birthday in style.

Vi, as she prefers to be known, was delighted with her telegram from the Queen and her party.

She still recalls having to go to an air raid shelter at Highbury in London during the First World War, as well as working as a laundress with her mother, stiffening shirt collars.

During her life she also worked as a shopkeeper and office worker, marrying her late husband Thomas - whom she described as "a perfect gentleman" - in 1944.

He had been in the Grenadier Guards, then the police force and finally worked for the Post Office. After living in Essex for 25 years, they moved to Devon in 1994 and Thomas passed away in 2002.

Vi has always been a lover of swing music, as well as ballroom dancing and the theatre.
