Take the plunge in Woolacombe and Appledore to welcome in 2017

Hardy North Devon souls will be preparing to take the plunge to celebrate the start of 2017.

Traditional New Year's Day sea swims are being held in Woolacombe and Appledore - and everyone is welcome to brave the waves.

Woolacombe Surf Lifesaving Club is inviting club members, friends and family to take a 'dip' at 11am on the dropping tide, followed by a hot chocolate in the Red Barn.

Around 100 took part in the 2016 swim, which has been held annually since 2000.

Meanwhile in Appledore, people have been braving the Torridge Estuary on New Year's Day for more than 20 years.

The January 1 fancy dress swim takes place by the slipway near the Beaver Inn and starts at 10am.

It will be raising money for the West Quay Fundraisers.
