A Barnstaple doorman is giving up alcohol throughout January to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
And Simon Chambers, who also works at the Job Centre, is taking his ‘Dryathlon’ a step further this year by also quitting junk food and caffeine –which he admits is proving more tricky than the alcohol.
Simon said he didn’t even have to think about taking on the challenge, with his uncle currently fighting lung cancer.
His auntie has also battled cancer, and last year one of Simon’s closest friends lost their mum to the illness.
The keen footballer has already raised £450 through his efforts, which he hopes to see increase beyond the £1,000 mark.
“Being a bouncer, you look at people and think ‘I’m not going to feel like them on Sunday morning,” he said.
“Everyone’s given the money already and I would be mortified if I didn’t stick to it.”
