A dedicated learner from North Devon College has been named Student of the Year for the South West.Bonny Rowland is from Bideford and is currently studying a part time ceramics foundation degree, was presented with the accolade at the National Certificate of Further Education (NCFE) awards.Bonny had overcome a significant period of anxiety and depression before attending a non-certificated art course in Bideford, then going on to enrol on the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Creative Craft course. Throughout her studies she demonstrated an extremely high quality of work and showed creativity, care and control. As a result of completing the course her confidence grew and she has now applied to do the part-time ceramics degree. She now instructs at the Stroke Club in Bideford and has recently been accepted as a volunteer at Northam Lodge, which provides residential and day care for those with profound learning disabilities. "I am really chuffed," said Bonny, "it's a very nice surprise and an acknowledgement of all the work I've been doing."It means such a lot that the teachers put me forward. My teacher, Taz, is such a good teacher, very patient and encouraging without being patronising. She has made the course very unique and I have really enjoyed it."Bonny travelled with current tutor Tamzin Pollard and Project Leader David Baker to the awards ceremony in Newcastle where she received her award and a £100 prize."Bonny has excelled far beyond the course requirements producing work with depth of content and creativity explored at every angle. We are all very proud of her achievements," said David.
