WITH just weeks to go until the bloom judges arrive in town, Barnstaple's Bloom Committee is urging local businesses to pledge their support to this year's floral push. The team has introduced a "We Support Barnstaple in Bloom 2008" window sticker for participating businesses to display ahead of the big day on July 17.On Monday, chairman John Wilsher presented the first sticker to Tuly Street restaurant Sacks, one of around 200 local businesses that have made an effort to improve the town by providing floral displays or by helping with volunteers or sponsorship."The Bloom Committe think it very important that everyone can see and recognise those who support our efforts and who help to make Barnstaple the fabulous place it is in the summer," said Mr Wilsher."Over the years, Barnstaple has won a national reputation second to none for its floral displays. "This wouldn't have been possible without the generous support of local shopkeepers and businesses. Just a walk around the town will highlight those many shops and commercial organisations that make an effort to brighten up the town and make it a much nicer place for people to live, work and visit."Mr Wilsher said that each year, the committee needed to find between £25,000 and £30,000 on top of the £15,000 grant aid given by North Devon and Barnstaple Town Councils."Financial help from businesses is essential," added Mr Wilsher."We obviously aim to continue to do well in the regional and national competitions, although more important to us is maintaining the ambience and atmosphere of a town proud of itself as the place to be.
