A Barnstaple couple has brought a taste of the capital to Barnstaple with their new café.

Andy and Tran Stephenson have opened Block in Butchers Row, serving coffee and their favourite foods from around the world in a family-friendly environment.

The couple moved to North Devon from London three years ago, and after working different jobs, decided to bring some of the things they miss from the capital to their new venture.

Andy, 42, and Tran, 38, have cherry-picked the menu and promise to regularly update it, and with locally-sourced ingredients and no sign of processed or unethical foods, hope it can be somewhere for families to come and relax.

Andy said: "We've got a five-year-old boy and we didn't feel there were many places to take him out for dinner.

"We wanted to open somewhere where we feel comfortable selling dishes from around the world in a place where people can feel comfortable any time of day."

After a soft opening, the couple are 'getting into the swing' of running their new venture, but hope to extend their opening hours in the future.

Andy said: "I worked at Bray Leino for three years which was great, but we decided it was time to start out on our own and do something long-term.

"We've had so many people come in and say 'I've always wanted to do something like this'.

"People have been really receptive and we've had lots of really positive comments and support.

"All the other traders have been really good and the guys on the market have been really helpful in getting us set up, as has Hannah [Harrington] the town centre manager."

Block is open Tuesday to Saturday from 8am to 6pm.
