Blazing straw trailer closes road at Colleton Mills

THE A377 between Colleton Mills and Fortescue Cross near Chulmleigh was closed for a time yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon when a trailer carrying 10 tonnes of straw bales caught fire.
Initially, fire engines from Chulmleigh and South Molton went to the scene, but the crews asked for more help.
Engines from Witheridge and North Tawton were sent as well as an incident command vehicle from Ilfracombe and a water bowser from Barnstaple.
The crews used four sets of breathing apparatus and four hose reel jets as well as beaters and forks to deal with the fire.

A mechanical digger was later brought in to remove the straw from the road. The trailer was totally destroyed.
