BIDEFORD’S first Wetherspoon pub opened its doors this morning (Tues) as the mayor of the town cut the red ribbon.

Councillor Simon Inch declared £1.5 million Rose Salterne pub officially open at 8am as the pub’s first customers gathered outside waiting for breakfast.

Cllr Inch said he was delighted to see the new pub opening in the former Bideford Carpet and Furnishings Centre in Bridgeland Street.

“They’ve done a marvelous job here and I think it will bring a lot of people into Bideford,” he said.

“It’s nice to see a family orientated pub where people can come out for a reasonably priced lunch.

“It’s great for the town and I think it might lead other pubs to step up their game now they have a bit of competition.”

Emma Bowman, who manages the pub with her husband Pete, said they were glad to finally see the doors open.

She said: “The staff have done really well through training and we really did put them through their paces.

“Everybody that has come in had enjoyed themselves and we hope it will continue.”
