Teams and individuals launched their hand-constructed crafts into the Torridge at Bideford Quay as part of Bideford Water Festival. While some managed to paddle their boats to the buoy and back, others ended up capsizing, with some boats even disintegrating. Bideford Rotary Club president Morris Poole won the first single paddler, with Northam Lodges Usain Bolt entry winning first multi-paddler. The best capsize went to Steve and Jacqui Willoughby, and Buzz Lightyear was voted the most entertaining. Event sponsors Atlas Packaging took best design with their professionally-constructed cardboard pirate ship. As well as enjoying the cardboard boat-based entertainment, crowds could take part in a day full of water-themed activities. The water festival was officially opened by mayor Councillor Doug Bushby, followed by performances from Bideford Pheonix Morris Dancer and Dance Fit. There was also racing from North Devon Yacht Club and a chance to look round the RNLI lifeboat. Scroll down for more photos from the day from photographers Graham Hobbs and Simon Ellery.
