Lucky otter statue could be installed on Bideford Quay this summer after town council agrees to match fund appeal.

A bronze-cast statue of Tarka the ‘lucky’ otter could be installed on Bideford Quay this summer.

In March the Gazette reported how the Bideford Town Centre Partnership had launched a £15,000 appeal for the statue.

And the town council has given the appeal a boost by agreeing to match fund the appeal up to £7,500.

Tonia Quance, of the partnership, told Bideford Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday she believed this meant the otter could be in place this summer.

She said: “Torridge District Council has promised some section 106 money earmarked for public art.

“Hopefully, with that, we are literally at the summit, as long as everyone holds up to their promises.”

The partnership is also putting together a commemorative book, giving a full page to everyone who donates upwards of £50.

The memorial book will sit in The Burton alongside a smaller version of the otter statue.

To donate, visit Bideford Cobblers and Keys in Bideford High Street. Cheques must be made payable to Bideford and District Chamber of Commerce.
