A giant-vegetable grower from Bideford has returned from a national competition with a prize haul almost as big as some of his extraordinary exhibits.

David Maund, 67, picked up seven prize cards at the Malvern Autumn Show, including a second place for a giant squash, weighing in at 378lb.

His haul also included two third places, plus a fourth, a fifth and two sixths.

Five world records were smashed at the show, including a cucumber of 12.9kg grown by David Thomas and a beetroot of more than seven metres in length grown by Joe Atherton.

"Given the strength of the opposition I was absolutely chuffed," said David.

"It was a fantastic experience and I've got some of the best seed in the world from different growers, so hopefully I can grow some huge onions and leeks next year.

"Hopefully, with the experience and the right seed, I can go one better next year and pick up some firsts."
