DEVON County Council's recycling centre at Caddsdown Industrial Estate in Bideford has been recognised as one of the best in the country. The site - which opened in May last year - is in the top three of all UK recycling centres. Alongside similar facilities in Southampton and Caterham, it achieved runner-up status in the recycling centre of the year category of the Letsrecycle.com 2008 Awards.Cllr Margaret Rogers, the council's executive member for environment, said local residents could feel proud to have played a part in helping the centre to gain its recognition. "The Bideford recycling centre marks a new era in the design and operation of recycling centres in Devon," she said."Thanks go to all involved in making it a success, particularly the householders of Bideford and the surrounding areas who have embraced the site and are keen to do their bit in making Devon greener. "Chris Bailey and his team who work at the site have received deserved praise from the public, and thanks must also go to the waste management and engineering teams at Devon County Council, and Viridor Waste Management Ltd who operate the site on the council's behalf."One of the comments left by a member of the public read: "A trip to the 'tip' is now a pleasant experience rather than a chore." Another commented: "Great location, easy access, amazingly no queues on a Saturday morning, clearly signposted containers and, above all, friendly and helpful staff. If dumping stuff could ever be described as a joy then it was!"PICTURE CAPTION: TIP for the top!
