A man has been remanded in custody charged with starting a Bideford fire and making threats to kill.

Darren Paul Smith, c/o Travelodge in Barnstaple, appeared at Exeter Magistrates Court on Saturday (May 4) on three charges.

The 40-year-old was charged with arson with intent to endanger life on April 27, relating to the fire at the Quaker House in Honestone Street, Bideford.

He was also charged with causing fear of violence by sending abusive and threatening messages purporting to be a third party and causing damage to the victim's vehicle and home.

This offence is alleged to have taken place between April 21 and May 3.

The third charge against Mr Smith was of making threats to kill the same victim on Friday, May 2, in Winkleigh.

He was remanded in custody until May 20 where he will appear at Exeter Crown Court for a first hearing.
