An 18-year-old man has pleaded guilty to an attempted armed robbery in Barnstaple on May 28. Benjamin Barton, of Clovelly Road, Bideford, was remanded in custody yesterday (Thursday) at Exeter Crown Court while awaiting sentence. Barton was arrested on July 2 for the raid on Coopers Jewellery in Barnstaple High Street. He entered the jewellery store wearing a full latex-head mask and sunglasses, and threatened store owner David Bruce with a gun. Mr Bruce, a black belt in judo, fought back with a baseball back, causing Barton to flee empty handed from the store. Barton will appear on August 23 at Exeter Crown Court for sentencing, following a pre sentence report by probation.
