A family-owned Bideford engineering firm is celebrating six decades of business.The Whiteland family has three generations currently working at its firm, Whiteland Engineering Ltd, in Torrington Lane. David Whiteland, 84, Neil Whiteland, 51, and Alex Whiteland, 18, got together to celebrate the businesss 60 years with employees this month. Whiteland Engineering was founded in 1956 by Walter Hanson Whiteland, and his son David began working there some three years later. The company initially designed and built machines and now has a workforce approaching some 30 people. Neil said: Some staff who are still with us today joined the company many years ago when they were just 15-year-old apprentices. We are hoping to take on a new apprentice soon and hopefully start that process all over again. The company enjoyed a birthday bash party at The Imperial Hotel to celebrate its 60 years in the town.
