Beverley Knight to perform at Barnstaple’s Christmas lights switch-on
‘Queen of British Soul’ is revealed as this year’s headline act.
ORGANISERS of Barnstaple’s annual Christmas lights switch-on have pulled off another major musical coup with confirmation that soul sensation Beverley Knight is to perform in the town this November.
The singer, billed as the ‘Queen of British Soul’, will headline what is shaping up to be another showcase night in The Square, designed to coincide with launch the first of the town’s late-night Christmas shopping events on Thursday, November 22.
Noted for her staggering live performances which have gained her a legion of fans from David Bowie to Prince, and Take That to Jamiroquai, Beverley recently wowed an estimated worldwide television audience of one billion with an outstanding rendition of the song, I Am What I Am at the London 2012 Paralympics opening ceremony.
Beverley has been one of the UK’s most consistent artists of the past 15 years and has sold more than a million albums in the UK, including four gold albums.

“She has been one of the UK’s most consistent artists of the past 15 years and has scored several top 10 albums, including the platinum selling Voice: The Best Of Beverley Knight.
“She has also sold more than a million albums in the UK along the way, including four gold albums, her latest being the critically acclaimed Soul UK.
“We are really excited that she is coming to Barnstaple as we know people are going to love her and really enjoy the show we have organised for them.”
Barnstaple has earned itself an enviable reputation in the South West for attracting top talent in the last five years, with Joss Stone, The Saturdays, Noisettes, Newton Faulkner and Dionne Bromfield among those who have performed in the Square.
Mr Bulley said that the event, organised by town centre management and BID Barnstaple, had been switched from a Sunday to a Thursday at the request of retailers, who it is hoped will benefit from what is certain to be a huge footfall in the town.
He said this year’s switch-on event would rival those of any of the town’s competitors in the South West.
“This Christmas lights switch-on is going to be really and truly amazing – probably the best yet. This booking most certainly underlines the town’s ability to attract top names.”
Further details of the switch-on day and other Christmas events are set to be announced shortly.
