Ben Bengey, 22, beat three other nominees for the Young Fisherman of the Year 2019 at the Fishing News Awards on May 16. Ben, who works on his own boat Shelly N (BD 3019) was nominated for his determination and innovative approach to tackling the ever-changing landscape of the fishing industry. He told the Gazette: "I was very shocked to win the award, was up against tough competition. "It's nice to get recognised for doing something good in the industry when all you seem to hear is bad news at the moment. "I would like to thank all the skippers and crews I have worked with and all the skills and knowledge they have passed on what I can now pass on to my crew. "I would also like to see more young fisherman coming into the industry." Ben started working on lobster and crab boats ages 15 and has since worked on many vessels. At age 18 his boat Silver Spirit was the only one in Ilfracombe Harbour with both a commercial and a charter licence. He has also been on the crew of Ilfracombe RNLI lifeboat for five years, following in the footsteps of his dad Andrew, who still serves on the crew.
