Police appeal for information on alleged assault after hooded man got angry when woman declined to give him change and a cigarette.

A Barnstaple woman was hit in the face with a can of alcohol when she refused to give a man change and a cigarette.

Police said the woman in her 50s was at a bus stop in Churchill Way, Northam, at 9.30pm on Monday when a man approached her.

A police spokeman said: “A male has approached her and asked for change and a cigarette, when she declined he got angry with her and started to throw his arm up towards her, which caused the woman to feel scared and ran to seek help from a nearby premises.

“When he threw his arm up, he has struck the female in the face, with a container with alcohol in, which caused slight swelling to her cheek.”

The man is described as white, in his early 20s wearing dark, bulky clothing and a hooded top, like he had layers on, ‘which gave the impression that he may be homeless’, said police.

The area was well lit and it is hoped passersby may have seen the man and can help officers with their enquiries.
