Two veterans of the Far East campaign joined a memorial service in Barnstaple yesterday (Tuesday) to mark VJ Day. Burma Star veterans George Rice, 94 and from Combe Martin and Gordon Short, 96 and from Burrington, attended the Rock Park memorial in honour of those they served with and those who never came home. VJ Day on August 15, 1945, marked the end of the Second World War. The annual event was organised by Barnstaple British Legion and the remembrance service was conducted by the Reverend David Fletcher, with Barnstaple mayor and consort Julie and David Hunt in attendance. Passersby paused to reflect as the notes of the Last Post fell over the park and a minutes silence was observed. Mr Rice served with the Royal Air Force at Arakan in Burma while Mr Short was commissioned with the Devons and then served with the 4th Battalion Royal West Kents during the campaign to push the Japanese out of Burma. Burma Star widows Valerie Patt, for her late husband Leslie and Barbara Squire, for her husband John, also attended to pay their respects.
