A Barnstaple cafe is offering customers a chance to buy a coffee for someone in need.

Purity Petal, in Church Lane, is the first place in Barnstaple to offer the ‘suspended coffees’ scheme.

Owner Maria Rose said: “The idea is you buy your own drink and then you also buy a hot drink to ‘suspend’.

“We place a pebble in a jar for all the suspended coffees bought and then anyone who needs them can come in.

“It might be someone who is not in a good financial situation, or someone who has had a really stressful day at work and just needs that.”

Maria said now she hoped to spread the word to let people know about it.

“I don’t think there is anyone else in Barnstaple or Bideford who has done this,” added Maria.

“I saw about it in America and I really want the cafe to have a proper community feel.

“There was a time I would have really benefitted from this myself.”
