In May 2009 Barnstaple Lions Club in partnership with Barnstaple Town Council took part in the first national Family Week which featured a whole series of events aimed at family involvement.

One such event was a family picnic, part of a Guinness World Record attempt to hold the world's largest group picnic.

Together the Lions and the Council held such a picnic and 945 picnickers registered in Rock Park making the Barnstaple picnic the third largest in the UK, beaten only by National Family Week London (HO) with 1,134 and Kingston upon Hull City Council with 1,258.

The picnic is taking place again this year on Monday, May 31. Barnstaple is now one of the flagship picnics in the UK, with music, games arena events and lots, lots more!
