Independent businesses of Barnstaple are offering shoppers the chance to grab a bargain as they take part in their third 'Totally Locally' national Fiver Fest.
From Saturday 12 to Saturday, June 26, a variety of independent Barnstaple businesses will be joining many other towns across the UK putting on special £5 offers for shoppers.
Fiver Fest is the chance for independent businesses to use their collective power to encourage people back to town centres, to thank customers who supported them during lockdown and to prove that small businesses can compete with the online giants and supermarkets when it comes to their contribution to the local economy.
Each participating business will not only have a poster advertising their offer, but also a list of all other businesses taking part, along with their offers. Fiver Fest comes with a very simple but powerful message: If every adult in Barnstaple spent just £5 a week in local businesses, it would mean £4.7m going directly into our local economy.
Totally Locally's Fiver Fest builds on the messages of North Devon's Live Love Local campaign, run by North Devon Council in conjunction with the district's towns. The Live Love Local campaign was launched last year with the aim of supporting North Devon's local businesses to operate safely during the coronavirus pandemic and to encourage residents to spend their money locally to help our local economy recover.
Louise Darcy from Barnstaple Town Centre Management says: "This will be the third time that the businesses of Barnstaple have taken part in this wonderful celebration of all things local and, with almost 40 business already signed up, it’s set to be the biggest and best yet!

"North Devon's businesses have had a very difficult year, but they've worked so hard to adapt and persevere in the face of the challenges the pandemic has presented. This is a great opportunity for our businesses to thank their loyal customers - and in return for our residents to thank businesses for their ongoing efforts to continue serving the local community.
"Campaigns like Fiver Fest help to reinforce the important messages of the Live Love Local campaign; there are huge economic, cultural and environmental benefits of buying and shopping locally, so we should all be doing what we can to support local businesses and take advantage of everything they offer.

"It's not just the business the £5 is spent in that benefits; on average each independent business has around 12 local suppliers who are also often independent, family run businesses. That £5 is then re-spent locally further helping the town and area. Tiny actions like this can make a huge impact when lots of people vote with their feet and shop locally."
Posters will be going up in the windows of town centre businesses from Saturday, June 12. Residents are urged to keep their eyes peeled for a bargain and give local businesses the love and support they deserve.
