A young soldier from Barnstaple has saved his mate's life following a bomb blast in the dead of night in Afghanistan.

Lance Corporal Christopher Moffat, 24, is a Sapper serving with 28 Engineer Regiment in Afghanistan.

He was called into action when a colleague was blown up by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Southern Afghanistan in the pitch black during a night time patrol.

LCpl Moffat was only metres away when the device exploded. he was shaken but uninjured. Selflessly, when he realised what had happened, he reacted swiftly and decisively and ultimately saved the life of the severely injured soldier.

LCpl Moffat said: "I knew that time was against us and we had to act quickly if he was to survive. It was pitch black and it all happened so quickly, but the excellent training we have had just took over."

LCpl Moffat had been trained as a patrol medic and had rehearsed his skills and drills numerous times in the lead up to deployment, in the event that this type of incident should occur.

The injured soldier was flown back to Camp Bastion where his life saving treatment continued in the state of the art British hospital there. The Doctors and medics in Camp Bastion praised the medical attention applied to the wounded soldier while on the ground.

LCpl Moffat beamed when knew that this mate was safe: "The most rewarding part about the whole incident was after I received the news, that the casualty was stable within a matter of hours following the treatment I had given him at the blast site."

Following an education in Braunton Comprehensive and North Devon College, joining the Army has always been a lifelong ambition. LCpl Moffat's wife Emma also has several ties with the Army. Her father served for 15 years, her brother is a serving soldier as are several of her uncles.
