Barnstaple Fair Heritage Society have received a welcome boost after receiving lottery funding for an exciting project.

A project to celebrate half a century of Barnstaple fair has been given a boost after receiving lottery funding.

The Barnstaple Fair Heritage Society has been given a £9,700 Heritage Lottery Fund grant to put on a community event running through the summer and into fair week.

A packed programme of events will include a carnival queen reunion, workshops for children and the chance for people to recall their memories of the fair.

The Museum of Barnstaple will be working with the society for the event, which is called Barnstaple Fair the Last 50 Years. Society chairman Mel Lovering said the society is ‘extremely pleased’ with the news and has many plans to make a great summer event.

Plans include an oral history programme encouraging people to talk about their experiences of the fair and a special evening of celebrations.

In addition, the museum will hold workshops for children to create posters and costumes for the fair and carnival. There will also be a collection of models and photos spanning the history of the fair.
