A popular Barnstaple business has expanded with a new coffee and skateboard shop.

Beats Workin' in Queen Street opened its very own 'coffee 'n' skate' shop yesterday (Tuesday), just a few doors down from the original shop.

And even manager Glenn Field, who set up the business in 2003, admitted it was a surprising new direction.

"I just went to work on Monday and had no idea that by the end of the week we would have planned to make a coffee shop," he said.

"I would have laughed at you if you had told me I was going to open one.

"From the start, Beats has been all about representing an individual vibe, and that's what we've gone for here."

And it's not just about top-class coffee - the shop also stocks a large range of skateboard hardware. The original store will focus on skate clothing.

All of the packaging used in the shop is biodegradable, while the coffee is ethically sourced from the Beanberry coffee company.

Glenn and the team got the keys to the shop at the end of March, and have run several pop-up shops alongside the original store.

"I wanted to open something for the creative people in North Devon," said Glenn.
