ORCHARD Vale Community School in Barnstaple is reaching out to the community by opening, a coffee pit stop for parents! The idea is to support families by giving them a great place to meet, talk and find out about what is going on in the area. The project is linked to the government's wider school remit to extend services to parents through the use of local schools as a centre to signpost other services and be able to clearly reflect parents' views and needs within their community.Coffee Corner was officially opened by district councillor Julie Hunt where parents, school governors and teachers all joined together to sample freshly made Fair Trade coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Open every school morning, Coffee Corner will provide a welcome break for busy parents after dropping off their children. "Our aim is to bring our community of families together by giving parents a comfy place to meet, make new friends, whilst of course enjoying a scrumptious hot drink!" says Janet Baker, head teacher of Orchard Vale School Informative leaflets about local courses, support organisations, facilities and family events are easily accessible to the visiting parents some of whom are also volunteering their time to develop this project. The inviting and colourful cafe has been made possible with support from the Barnstaple Learning Community as part of its extended schools programme.
