Special oxygen masks for pets are to be carried on some Barnstaple fire engines. Animals can be helpless before house fires but thanks to funding from Pets At Home they now have abetter chance of survival. The masks were provided by not-for-profit organisation Smokey Paws, which works to help pets in the event of a fire. Funding was provided through a Pets At Home in-store reward scheme. Barnstaple is one of eight fire stations in Devon and Somerset to benefit from the scheme. Watch manager Dean Hastie said he appreciated how important pets were to people: If this goes just that bit further to help improve the chances of survival for a pet, then its worth every effort. Many pet owners live alone and rely on their company for support, so this is just as important to their welfare as well as the pet in a stressful fire situation.
