BARNSTAPLE'S New Year's Eve celebrations will be going off with a bang this year as organisers promise a night to remember. Volunteers have been busy drawing up plans for another family-friendly celebration on the Square - almost since the final words of Auld Lang Syne rang out at last year's successful event.Event co-organiser James Chapple of Chapple Entertainment said that although fund-raising for the event had been pretty tough this year, the show would go on and would be bigger and better!"We've got there and are looking forward to putting on another great event to put Barnstaple on the map," he said."We have a much bigger stage this year, with an impressive sound system and some fantastic bands, including Mendella and Sam Dowden. "Mayor of Barnstaple Cllr Jeremy Phillips will be pressing the button to let off the fireworks at midnight," he added. The fund-raising celebrations will start at 9pm and end at 1am, with collections for local charities, North Devon Hospice and Children's Hospice South West. A full road closure will be in place for Belle Meadow Road, Lower Boutport Street and Barnstaple Long Bridge.James was keen to point out that the event was not being organised to rival Bideford's famous celebrations."We want to offer people a family-friendly alternative and would like to take the opportunity to warn elderly residents or people with pets that there will be a fireworks display at midnight, he said. For more details about the event and weekly updates, log on to www.barnstaplenewyearseve.co.uk.
