Chairman says town’s 70th consecutive carnival will be a day to remember

The chairman of Barnstaple carnival committee says he is 'overwhelmed and delighted' with the support from businesses ahead of the 70th consecutive anniversary of the event next month.

And John White says plans are in place to make the parade on September 17 bigger and better than ever.

"We already have 14 large floats entered so the procession should be much bigger from start to finish," he said.

"There will also be a sound system on the Strand and colourful bunting along the whole route.

"And the marshals will have new radios this year to help ensure a smoother flow," added Mr White.

The carnival atmosphere will be enhanced by the owners of Tuly Street restaurant Monty's Caribbean Kitchen, who are planning to enter the parade with a Caribbean band.

Street food and stalls will line the Strand from 10am on the day and a smaller children's procession will set off from the bottom of Cross Street at 3.30pm.
