Colin Bryant and wife Dru have been delivering milk around Barnstaple and Braunton for 30 years. But with the help of a traditional electric milk float, the couple are now delivering glass bottles to doorsteps, just like the good old days. While they still deliver some milk in plastic bottles which Colin says are easier for some elderly people who can grip them better the move to glass has been supported by the Plastic Free North Devon campaign. It went a bit ballistic when they shared the fact we were using glass bottles on the Plastic Free North Devon Facebook page, said Dru. There has been a huge amount of interest in the glass bottles. I think even more so in this Cath Kidston generation where glass bottles are very fashionable. The emails were coming through faster than I could respond to them. It was very exciting. Colin and Dru, with the help of a part-time delivery driver, currently deliver milk, juice and local produce to more than 600 homes. The couple support British milk and try to source produce as locally as possible where they can. The business started in 1988 when Colin was working as a butcher in Barnstaple, and heard the local milkman was selling up. Colin, who never minding early mornings, decided he fancied being his own boss and bought the business. In 1992 Colin was introduced to Dru by a customer. He asked her out and on their second date knew she was the one. Now married with a daughter, Lottie, who was born in 1998, Colin still delivers the milk while Dru runs the office. Dru said: We have been hit by supermarkets selling cheap milk. We know not everyone likes paying on the doorstep so weve brought things into the 21st century with e-receipts and using online banking if people prefer. I think people are delighted by the glass bottles; they say they remember having them as a child. A lot of families want their children to experience having milk on the doorstep like they did as a child. Colin Bryant delivers milk across Barnstaple, Braunton, Landkey, Swimbridge, Filleigh and West Buckland. Find out more at colinbryantmilkman.co.uk or on 01271 377817.
