The mayor, deputy mayor and three other councillors plan to have their noses to the treadmill at TM Fitness for the next nine months...

Five Barnstaple councillors have begun a major nine month sponsored slim to raise money for charity.

The mayor, Councillor Julie Hunt and deputy mayor Ian Roome plus councillors Sue Haywood, Fred Jefferies and Gareth Langford hope to shed the stones and pick up the pounds for this year’s mayor’s charities.

TM Fitness at Fairview has given them free gym membership and staff will also be helping with diets, fitness training, regular weigh-ins and assessments.

The charities to benefits will be Chemo Heroes, Barnstaple Dementia Action Alliance, Honey Bravery Bags and North Devon Hospice.

Julie Hunt said they would be holding their final weigh in on May 1 next year.

“This is actually the heaviest I have been in my life,” she said.

“It’s going to be hard for me, because I have a sweet tooth, I love surgery foods and if I want it, I eat it.”

Local McDonald’s franchisee and Julie’s husband David
Hunt has said he will match
fund everything she raises.
