The Cedars Inn has been named a Barnstaple disability employment champion.

It was awarded Employer of the Year at a Disability Confident event hosted by Barnstaple-based Pluss, which works to help people with disabilities get back into the workplace.

Disability Confident is a national campaign launched to encourage employers to be positive about the skills disabled people bring to business.

The Cedars employs eight people with various disabilities who have come through the Pluss system and now have full-time positions.

Waitress Leasan Chipperfield was also named Employee of the Year at the event held at The Cedars Inn, for her trademark sunny personality, excellent customer service and a 'can do' attitude.

"It's the first time I have ever been able to say I really love a job, and I am so pleased to hear I am doing a good job and proving useful," she said.

"It feels fantastic; the fact I am getting out of the house and doing something with my life."

Cedars general manager Peter Elder added: "Don't be frightened of disability - the people who have come through here are fantastic characters who are hard workers, committed, loyal and really want to work."
