A NEW action group being formed to fight over-development in and around Barnstaple has had to defer its first official meeting due to overwhelming interest from people in the town. Earlier this month, the Gazette reported that seven local groups are set to form an alliance to fend of plans for more than 2,000 new homes at Larkbear, Chivenor Cross, Fremington, Goodleigh Road, Pilton, Bishops Tawton and Bickington. But a meeting planned to take place at Roundswell Community Centre tomorrow (Thursday) has been postponed to enable organisers to find a bigger meeting hall. Secretary Jim Martin said: There has been lots of interest since the article and we are in the process of trying to find a bigger hall or venue. At the moment the number of members across all the groups is well over 1,000 and we are looking at finding a hall that will accommodate up to 300 people. Mr Martin said a new date and venue for a public meeting would be advertised as soon as possible. In the meantime, a committee meeting is also being scheduled to take place to enable the new alliance to decide on a name, main aims and executives. So much has happened and we want to get all our eggs in one basket before we go to the general public, said Mr Martin. We have a very lively committee and first and foremost, we have to do is get this up and running.
