Meet author and illustrator at Barnstaple Library’s Big Summer Read event on Saturday

A Barnstaple mum has written and published her first children’s picture book.

Lisa McNeill teamed up with illustrator Antony Carlyon, also from Barnstaple, to develop ‘The Lonely Lighthouse’ the story of a lovable lighthouse on an emotional journey of discovering friendship in the most unlikely of places.

Lisa said: “I always wanted to write a book, but I can’t quite believe that I have made it this far.

“I think that the fabulous environment in North Devon breeds creativity and definitely helped me to bring my lighthouse to life.”

Antony, who works as a creative lead at Mole Valley Farmers said: “It was a challenge to illustrate a whole book in my spare time but it’s one of the most rewarding things I have done in my career so far.”

The book is available to buy on Amazon or download on Kindle and is already proving a hit with schools in the local area.

Lisa was invited to read the book to Pilton Infants’ reception classes Wednesday, while Key Stage One pupils at Holywell Primary in Tawstock are set to complete a three-week project centred around the book.

Holywell teacher Gillian Ashcroft said: “It’s not every day that a book comes along that can be used in its entirety in the classroom.

“This one ticks lots of boxes; a simple premise, interesting but challenging vocabulary, lovely alliteration and a story that draws you in.”

You can catch Lisa and Antony at Barnstaple Library’s Big Summer Read event tomorrow (Saturday) from 9.30am to 3pm.

Bring your copy of the book to be signed, make a model lighthouse and ask a question while you’re there.
